Two Situations In Which You Should Get Shutters For Your Home

Pauline Chavez

Here are some situations in which you should consider getting shutters for your home.

You have tall windows and limited mobility

If your home's windows are tall and your mobility levels are not what they were, then you should get shutters. The reason for this is that any window dressing that's comprised mainly of fabric (i.e. curtains and blinds) will need to be removed from the window and washed a couple of times each year to stop odours and grime from making it smell or look stained and discoloured.

This is because unlike the PVC, MDF or solid wood from which shutters are typically made, the fabric that curtains and blinds are made from is absorbent. As such, once they come into contact with mud, dust or pungent odours, the only way to completely sanitise them is to remove them and put them in a washing machine. This is a difficult chore, even for people who are strong and flexible, and could be hazardous or even impossible to do safely if, for example, you have weak legs or a bad back that make climbing a ladder to get to the top of a tall window, or handling heavy curtains, very hard.

In this situation, shutters would be an excellent choice as, due to the fact that they're not permeable like fabrics are, all that you need to do to keep them clean and free of bad odours is to dust them and wipe them with a damp sponge. You should be able to do this yourself, without taking the risk of climbing any ladders, by using telescopic sponge cleaners and feather dusters.

You have several children and need child-friendly window dressings

If you have several children and need your window dressings to be child-friendly, shutters are probably your best bet. The reason for this is that, first and foremost, the solidity of shutters and the semi-permanent way that they're secured to the walls around a window means that they're stabler than blinds and curtains, whose flimsy fabrics children can grab hold of and pull off of a set of brackets or a curtain pole. This means that a pair of shutters will be virtually impossible for your children to accidentally remove and damage. Additionally, shutters won't be dangerous for your children to be near, as they don't have the hazardous cords, poles or rods that come with blinds and curtains, which can cause injuries if children access them.

Last but not least, if any of your children are going through phases where they're drawing and colouring on surfaces around the home, wipe-clean shutters would be a far better choice than blinds or curtains, as you should be able to remove most types of crayons, pencils and markers from these shutters quite easily. In contrast, an ink or crayon stain on a curtain panel or blind could be impossible to remove after it dries. Look into shutters near you for more information.
